TRAFFIC RULES IN KANSAS

Heading to Kansas Speedway for the Hollywood Casino 400 is all about enjoying the racing atmosphere. To keep your trip stress-free, it helps to know the local driving rules and habits before you get behind the wheel.

Driving in Kansas

As in the rest of the U.S., drivers in Kansas travel on the right side of the road. If this feels unfamiliar, be extra cautious at intersections, when leaving parking areas, or making U-turns near the Speedway.

Speed limits

Posted speed limits vary depending on where you’re driving. In neighborhoods, it’s usually 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h). State highways are often set at 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h), and interstates may allow up to 70 mph (113 km/h). Keep an eye on the signs, especially as limits can change quickly. Police regularly use radar, and fines for speeding can be steep.

Traffic lights and intersections

Kansas takes traffic signals seriously. Some busy junctions even have cameras to catch drivers running red lights. You can generally turn right on red after making a full stop, unless signs say otherwise. Always let pedestrians cross first, and don’t push through a yellow light if you can safely stop.

Alcohol and driving

DUI laws are strictly enforced. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers over 21, while younger drivers face zero tolerance. Random checkpoints sometimes appear during big events, including race weekends. If you’re planning to drink, arrange a safe ride with a friend, taxi, or rideshare.

Seat belt rules

Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt, no matter where they’re sitting. Kansas police can issue a ticket just for a seat belt violation, so make sure all passengers are strapped in before you start the engine.

Right-of-way and pedestrians

Kansas law favors pedestrians. Drivers must stop for anyone in a crosswalk, and at intersections without signals, the first car to arrive has priority. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the right goes first. Around the Speedway, expect lots of people on foot, and slow your speed accordingly.

If you’re pulled over by the Police

Should you be pulled over, stay calm and signal right. Find a safe spot to stop, ideally a well-lit area if it’s nighttime. Keep your hands visible, remain polite, and wait for the officer’s instructions.
